Air-to-air heat pump grant checker
Answer five questions and see honestly whether the Boiler Upgrade Scheme air-to-air grant could apply to your home, or why it would not.
Where is the home?
How this works
The checker applies the Boiler Upgrade Scheme conditions published on gov.uk. The scheme is open in England and Wales. The applicant must own the property; homeowners, landlords, owners of second homes and small businesses can apply. Social housing, most developer-built new homes and homes that have already had government funding for a heat pump or biomass boiler are excluded; self-builds can apply.
The deciding condition is replacement: an air-to-air heat pump that replaces fossil-fuel or electric heating, fitted by an MCS-certified installer, is eligible for the £2,500 grant. Cooling added alongside a boiler you keep does not qualify; that is private-pay air conditioning, fitted by an F-Gas / REFCOM engineer.
The heating question uses exactly the same rule and the same grant source as the Home Cooling Checker, so the two cannot disagree. Eligibility and claiming are separate: a voucher needs an installer MCS-certified for air-to-air, no installer can be yet, and MCS has not set a date. Grant rules as of August 2026, and subject to change.

Questions people ask
Can I get a grant for air conditioning?
Not for cooling on its own. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme pays £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump that replaces fossil-fuel or electric heating, fitted by an MCS-certified installer.
Can a tenant apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
No. Only the property owner can apply, so a tenant would need the landlord to apply.
Does the grant cover Scotland?
No. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme covers England and Wales. Home Energy Scotland runs separate support in Scotland.
Who applies for the voucher?
Your MCS-certified installer applies, you confirm, and the grant comes off your quote. The installer then has 120 days to fit the system.
