What an air-to-air heat pump is
An air-to-air heat pump is a modern high-wall or ceiling unit - the same hardware most people call air conditioning - with one difference that changes everything: it heats as well as cools. A refrigerant cycle moves heat from one place to another, so the same box that pulls warmth out of a room in July can pump warmth into it in January. It is near-silent, controllable room by room, and because it does both jobs it can replace a conventional heating system entirely rather than sit alongside one.
Installers and manufacturers sometimes call it a "reversible air conditioner" or a "comfort heat pump". It is the same thing. What sets it apart from the air-to-water heat pumps that dominate most UK coverage is that it delivers heating and cooling as air, straight into the room, instead of heating water for radiators and a hot-water cylinder.
Yes, it cools - and here is how
This is the question every UK buyer actually has, because most heat-pump coverage is about winter heating. The answer is unambiguous: an air-to-air heat pump cools your home in summer exactly as an air conditioner does, because in cooling mode it is an air conditioner. It runs the refrigerant cycle in reverse - absorbing heat from your rooms and rejecting it outside - so the room temperature genuinely falls, rather than the air simply being moved around.
That matters more every year. Around 55% of UK homes already overheat against the recognised summer-comfort benchmark, and top-floor flats, loft conversions and airtight new builds are worst hit. A fan pushes hot air around a room; an air-to-air heat pump removes the heat, which is the only thing that brings the temperature down on the hottest days.
What it costs to install and run
Install cost scales with how many rooms you cool. A single-room system starts at around £1,900-£2,185, and a whole-home multi-room install runs to about £3,700-£4,255. Where the heat pump replaces fossil-fuel or electric heating through an accredited installer, the £2,500 grant brings a whole-home job down to roughly £1,200-£1,755 net - and for a single room the grant can cover the install cost entirely.
Running cost depends on how much you heat and cool and on your electricity tariff. Because a heat pump moves heat rather than burning fuel to produce it, it delivers roughly three to four units of heating or cooling for every unit of electricity it draws, which makes it markedly cheaper to run than plug-in heaters or portable air conditioners. The £2,500 grant, honestly
The government's Boiler Upgrade Scheme pays £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump. The rule has been law since 28 April 2026, so this is not a scheme that starts later - but no installer can issue a voucher until air-to-air products reach the MCS Product Directory. It also only pays in one of two situations, so here are both, weighted equally.
Eligible - you replace your heating. If an air-to-air heat pump replaces a fossil-fuel or electric system (mains gas, oil, LPG, electric storage heaters or direct electric) and is fitted by an MCS-certified installer, the £2,500 applies, and the old system is decommissioned rather than run alongside the new one.
Not eligible - you keep your boiler. If you keep your existing heating and add cooling as a standalone unit, that cooling-only add-on does not qualify for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, however it is marketed. Adding air conditioning while keeping your gas boiler is a private-pay job, carried out by an F-Gas / REFCOM-registered engineer rather than an MCS-certified one.
The grant itself is law and your eligibility is real, but no air-to-air product has reached the MCS Product Directory yet, so no installer can issue a Boiler Upgrade Scheme voucher today. Air-to-air enters MCS scheme scope on 5 December 2026, and vouchers follow once certified products list. Get quotes now, but treat the grant as pending rather than banked.
