Quick answer
Only in one specific case, yes. For a Hull home, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme pays £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump - a unit that both cools in summer and heats in winter - provided it replaces fossil-fuel or electric heating and an MCS-certified installer fits it. Add cooling while keeping your existing boiler, and that route does not qualify.
Heating in Hull, and what it means for the grant
Hull's heating mix is fairly typical for the areas we track: roughly 89.7% mains gas, 9.5% electric, and a small share of oil, LPG or solid fuel. None of that changes the grant rule - it pays on replacement, whatever heating type you currently have, once an MCS-certified installer confirms it.
Hull's heating, by the numbers
89.7% of Hull's EPC-certified homes heat on mains gas, 9.5% on electric and 0.2% on oil, LPG or solid fuel, typical annual heating costs across the property types we track here run around £600, band D is the commonest EPC rating here, covering 45% of rated homes and this fuel-mix figure covers 99.7% of Hull's EPC certificates, so it is a real, high-confidence local read, not a national estimate applied to your postcode.
The two honest branches
Everything about whether the grant pays a Hull homeowner turns on one choice: replacing the existing heating, or leaving it in place. We set out both routes with the same weight, not as a blanket promise either way.
Eligible - you replace your heating. If an air-to-air heat pump replaces a fossil-fuel or electric system (mains gas, oil, LPG, electric storage heaters or direct electric) and is fitted by an MCS-certified installer, the £2,500 applies, and the old system is decommissioned rather than run alongside the new one.
Not eligible - you keep your boiler. If you keep your existing heating and add cooling as a standalone unit, that cooling-only add-on does not qualify for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, however it is marketed. Adding air conditioning while keeping your gas boiler is a private-pay job, carried out by an F-Gas / REFCOM-registered engineer rather than an MCS-certified one.
The grant itself is law and your eligibility is real, but no air-to-air product has reached the MCS Product Directory yet, so no installer can issue a Boiler Upgrade Scheme voucher today. Air-to-air enters MCS scheme scope on 5 December 2026, and vouchers follow once certified products list. Get quotes now, but treat the grant as pending rather than banked.
Grant rules as of August 2026 and subject to change, so always confirm the current terms on gov.uk before applying. The grant itself is a national government scheme - Kingston upon Hull, City of Council has no say over your eligibility for it. If your Hull home also needs planning permission for the outdoor unit, that is a separate, local question our planning pages cover.
What MCS means for a grant-eligible install in Hull
MCS - the certification scheme for registered installers - is the quality standard your installer must hold for the grant to pay. It certifies the installer and the installation work, never the homeowner and never GetComfort.
An air-to-air enquiry from Hull that qualifies for the grant goes to an MCS-certified installer; a cooling-only job goes to an F-Gas / REFCOM-registered engineer instead, since that is the licence refrigerant-only work actually requires. Mixing the two accreditations up is the mistake we see most often.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get the £2,500 grant for air conditioning in Hull?
In one specific situation, yes. The £2,500 pays out when an air-to-air heat pump replaces your existing fossil-fuel or electric heating, fitted by an MCS-certified installer. Keep your existing heating and just add cooling instead, and that add-on does not qualify, however it is described.
Is the grant available in Hull right now, or is it coming later?
The rule applies in Hull now; the money does not flow yet. The air-to-air route of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme became law on 28 April 2026, so you can establish eligibility today, but vouchers cannot be issued until air-to-air products list on the MCS Product Directory, expected as air-to-air enters MCS scope on 5 December 2026. (Grant rules as of August 2026 and subject to change.)
Does my Hull installer need to be MCS-certified?
For the grant, yes. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme only pays when an MCS-certified installer fits the air-to-air heat pump - MCS is the certification scheme for registered installers, not a homeowner qualification. A cooling-only air-conditioning job in Hull does not go through MCS at all; it needs an F-Gas / REFCOM-registered engineer instead.
What if I want to keep my gas boiler and just add air conditioning in Hull?
The grant will not apply. Its whole basis is replacing and decommissioning existing heating, not adding to it. For a Hull home keeping its boiler, cooling is a private-pay install carried out by an F-Gas / REFCOM-registered engineer instead.
